Groote Eylandt is the largest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, with tropical savannah bush, beautiful sandy beaches and countless rocky headlands. Surrounding Groote are a number of smaller islands, together making up the Groote Archipelago.

Victorian farmer Mac Kerr caught his first Barra last week – and it was a beauty at 1.12m.
Kerr, a guest at the Escape Sportfishing Lodge on Groote Eylandt, off Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, was luring near the mouth of the Walker River to the west of Groote Eylandt when the big fish hit – and hit hard.

Billfish galore is what competitors of the 21st Annual Billfish tournament competitors found in the fish rich waters off Groote Eylandt between 3 rd and 11 th November.
This NTGFA Sanctioned event held over nine days saw anglers from all over the NT fish three consecutive days per team targeting the elusive sailfish and small black marlin that congregate in the southern waters off Groote Eylandt.
